Peeling and resurfacing solutions have been used for literally thousands of years; however, the materials used have gone through a number of transformations. In the last 10 years, due to the development of new solutions, we are better able to control the depth and therefore the results.
Cleopatra was really the first to explore Lactic Acid, as it was her habit to bathe in milk everyday. Lactic Acid has long since been used to refresh the complexion. Due to advances in science we are able to work with Lactic Acid in a pure form, which enables us to achieve a more intense refinishing than ever before.
People of different cultures have long used different fruits such as grapes and citrus to create natural refinishers. These have since “come out of the garden” and moved into the laboratory to produce some of the most potent acid components available.
Please note that there is a distinction between peeling and resurfacing as many clients are misled by the peeling title and assume that peeling will occur, when in some cases the product has resurfaced the skin and no “peeling is perceived.”
How do the acids work?
All peeling/resurfacing solutions work on the surface of the epidermis, removing dead skin cells from the stratum cornium. This calls into action a number of responses from the skin. The basal cell layer jumps into action and deploys new keratinocytes increasing cell turnover. When we assist the skin’s process by exfoliation of superficial cells we assist the entire structure. By increasing circulation and the ability of active ingredients to penetrate farther than they could before, we are able to truly refinish and resurface the skin.
